HIRING AN INTERN

In order for the internship of the selected student to be approved, you must :

OBLIGATIONS OF THE INTERNSHIP ENVIRONMENT

  • Comply with all applicable laws regarding equity, occupational health, and safety in effect in your jurisdiction. In Quebec, this includes, in particular, the Act respecting labor standards, the Act respecting the protection of interns in the workplace, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and the Act respecting industrial accidents and occupational diseases (AIOAD). Regardless of where the internship takes place, the employer must be able to:
  • ensure a professional environment that is free from discrimination, harassment, and any form of sexual violence toward the intern;
  • ensure a safe environment and take the necessary measures to protect the intern’s health and ensure their safety and physical well-being.
  • Comply with the applicable laws and regulations of the province or country where the internship takes place regarding the protection of personal information, ensuring, in particular, compliance with the provisions governing the collection, retention, use, disclosure, and destruction of personal information.
  • Comply with the agreement entered into with the intern, particularly regarding the duration of the internship, compensation, scope of work, and equipment provided.

INSURANCE

During a paid internship, the student is one of your employees and is therefore protected by your insurance coverage.

HIRING AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

Event if the Service du développement professionnel is up to date and can provide information on this subject, it is responsability as an employer to check before hiring that the student has the necessary permits to do an internship in Canada. Learn more... (in French)

GRANTS FOR HIRING INTERNS

If your organisation is eligible for the Tax Credit for an On-the-Job Training Period, the Service du développement professionnel will provide you with the Tax Credit for an On-the-Job Training Period form duly filled which must be attached to the tax return. The person identified as responsible for the tax credit in the internship agreement will receive it by email approximately one month after the end of the semester of studies in which the internship took place, i.e. at the end of September (Summer internship), at the end of January (Fall internship) or at the end of May (Winter internship).
